Salaar has turned out to be a massive grosser at the US box office by amassing over $8.2 Million (65 crores). This is the biggest grosser outside SS Rajamouli films in Tollywood.
Despite such huge numbers, the film is considered an underperformer because, except for the Telugu version, the other versions have performed not to the expectations.
The Hindi version of Salaar has collected around $1.5 Million which is quite underwhelming. The Kannada, Tamil, and Malayalam versions have done extremely poor numbers.
Because of Salaar’s muted performance in other languages, now there are reports that distributors are not ready to pay more than 50 crores for Pushpa 2 in the U.S. Makers are quoting 100 crores but the buyers believe that anything over 50 would be a risky bet.
The Overseas Market for Telugu pan-India films has emerged weak. Pushpa makers are trying hard to crack a better deal but seems like the buyers are a bit reluctant seeing the performances of recent biggies from the industry barring Rajamouli movies. For Pushpa 2, the makers are asking nearly 100 crore for overseas rights. Adding interest on top of it, it looks like an impossible figure for buyers to recover.
Salaar was not a sequel but the brand of Prabhas and Prashanth Neel after KGF should have worked better in other language versions.
Pushpa is a sequel that gives it a huge edge over Salaar. But except for Allu Arjun, there is no other big name attached to it as far as other language audiences are concerned which again makes it a risky project.
It can’t be denied that Salaar’s underperformance overseas has cast its shadow on Pushpa 2 business.
