Avatar Franchise Finished in India? Shocking Opening

Avatar Fire and Ash India box office

James Cameron’s much anticipated Avatar: Fire and Ash released in Indian theatres on December 19, 2025. Expectations were high, but the film’s opening was overshadowed by the strong performance of Aditya Dhar’s action thriller Dhurandhar across key markets.

Before release, trade buzz suggested the sci-fi sequel would perform well in India. Instead, it opened with a modest Rs 18 crore collection. The figure surprised many given the franchise’s earlier success.

The opening marks a steep 50 to 55 percent drop compared to Avatar: The Way of Water. The 2022 release had debuted at Rs 40 crore on its first day. This sharp fall reflects reduced initial traction.

Language-wise figures show English versions leading with Rs 9 crore. Hindi shows followed at Rs 5.5 crore. South Indian dubbed versions contributed similar shares, indicating balanced but limited interest.

Trade analysts point to limited pre-release marketing as a key factor. Strong competition from Dhurandhar also played a major role. The film has secured mass screens and continues to dominate audience attention nationwide.

In comparison, Dhurandhar earned Rs 21 crores on Day 15 alone. Its Indian net collection now stands at Rs 457 crores. The film is steadily moving towards the Rs 500 crore mark.

Its global performance has been equally impressive. The worldwide gross has crossed Rs 700 crore. This has positioned Dhurandhar as one of the biggest blockbusters in recent times.

Despite the slow Indian start, Avatar: Fire and Ash has performed better overseas. The film earned over $43.1 million in its first two days internationally. Global audiences have responded more positively.

Industry observers cite weak advance bookings and limited screen capture as major issues. These factors restricted early momentum at the Indian box office. The franchise also appears to have lost some excitement in South Indian regions.

With the holiday period approaching, a rebound is expected for Avatar: Fire and Ash. However, Dhurandhar continues to hold strong. The clash highlights India’s growing tilt towards domestic mass action films.
