We are living in the OTT era, which has killed a lion’s share of the satellite market and also business happens through remake rights to a larger extent.
The market for remakes can be divided into before COVID and after COVID, as the OTT market saw a big surge in India during COVID, and people watching movies in other languages on OTT is not new now.
This has successfully killed the money producers make by selling remake rights. We have seen several true blue disasters, and big stars like Chiranjeevi and Pawan Kalyan are victims of these remakes.
At a time when producers are fearing to remake other language films, now we hear that Amazon Prime India is remaking a blockbuster TV series, Panchayat.
Panchayat has broken barriers across languages and has a major fanbase in every language, including the Telugu market.
Now, Prime has announced a remake of this blockbuster series, Panchayat, and its Telugu version titled ‘Sivarapalli.’
Firstly, what is the point of remaking a hugely popular show like Panchayat? How will they find audiences for this show in Telugu? How can it repeat the magic created by the original? How will they avoid comparisons with the original?
Moreover, the fact that TVF (The Viral Fever), the brains behind the original Panchayat, are behind this remake ‘Sivarapalli,’ is even more strange.
And it is even more odd that it happens at a time when Telugu OTT fans are eagerly waiting for Panchayat season 3.
Are there a dearth of new stories? There were a few examples in the past where they tried this idea of remaking shows, but has a single remake show made noise when it’s remade?
We call it a dumb idea because they are defeating the whole purpose of OTT by rehashing the same content that is already available on the OTT with new faces instead of coming up with fresh ideas.
Audiences are willing to embrace fresh ideas and novel thoughts, even if they are not well-made. However, rehashing the same ideas, whether it is for theaters or OTT, people find them unexciting.
