S. S. Rajamouli is widely regarded as one of the most celebrated filmmakers of this generation in Indian cinema. Known for delivering massive commercial blockbusters, he is considered one of the biggest directors not only in India but also across Asia.
However, when it comes to nurturing new directors, Rajamouli appears to lag behind some of his contemporaries. In particular, filmmaker Sukumar has built a strong reputation for mentoring new talent in the industry.
Several directors who previously worked with Sukumar have gone on to make successful debuts. Names such as Buchi Babu, Srikanth Odela, and Karthik Dandu are often cited as examples of filmmakers who emerged from his creative ecosystem.
Apart from these names, many others have also worked with Sukumar in different capacities and gradually built their own careers in filmmaking. This has created a strong mentorship network around him.
In contrast, the assistant direction team that previously worked with S. S. Rajamouli has not yet produced a widely recognised director in mainstream cinema. Despite his massive success as a filmmaker, this particular aspect remains noticeable.
One such name often mentioned is Ashwin Gangaraju, who reportedly worked with Rajamouli earlier. However, his debut film did not achieve the expected impact.
Meanwhile, filmmaker Trivikram Srinivas has also contributed to nurturing new directors. Venky Kudumula, known for films like Chalo and Bheeshma, is one of the successful directors associated with him.
It is important to note that established directors are not obligated to create new filmmakers from their teams. Mentorship is a choice rather than a responsibility.
Still, if someone who has closely worked with S. S. Rajamouli eventually replicates even a part of his filmmaking scale and vision, it could greatly benefit the Indian film industry.
