South Indian cinema has been consistently producing some of the biggest box office winners in Indian cinema for the last few years. But the problem has come with the fact that several South films have become largely stereotypical now.
It has become a standard format for many South Indian films to have vintage songs from old films, a couple of cameos, and if possible, a multistarrer setup.
This format has been applied by multiple films like Coolie, Jailer, and a hand full of Telugu films as well. It has arrived at a point of exhaustion where the audience are no longer excited about these vintage songs and cameo appearances.
Significantly more effort is expected from filmmaker to bring audience to theatres these days as simple gimmicks like that aforementioned ones are not going to cut the chase.
It might not be too long before this standard commercial elevation episodes for the hero track might also go off the rails. This particular commercial trope is used in almost every South Indian commercial film these days.
More refined story telling primarily based on drama is likely to be the arresting factor for the majority of the audience henceforth.
Bollywood was very reformative and dynamic with their commercial template changes in the past, but they too have gone into a shell and simply following South films these days. So the responsibility is not on South Indian cinema to set the right track for all of India to follow.
