Ever since Toxic was announced, one question has dominated trade discussions: Can Yash break the opening-day records set by KGF Chapter 2? The benchmark is enormous.
KGF Chapter 2 opened to around Rs. 50 crore net in the Hindi belt on Day 1 and grossed approximately Rs. 164 crore worldwide. As things stand today, Toxic appears miles away from matching those figures.
The biggest reason is the buzz.
While there is definite curiosity around the film, the excitement still doesn’t feel comparable to what KGF Chapter 2 generated. Back then, Yash was riding the massive wave of KGF Chapter 1, and the sequel had become a nationwide event months before its release.
Ironically, the biggest talking point around Yash right now isn’t Toxic. It is Ramayana.
His menacing appearance as Ravana in the recently released trailer has generated far more discussion on social media than Toxic itself. Toxic’s buzz has been somewhat overshadowed by the Ramayana wave.
Of course, the picture can change quickly. A stunning trailer, set to be released on August 8, and an aggressive marketing campaign over the next few days can dramatically change the momentum.
For now, however, surpassing KGF Chapter 2’s Hindi Day 1 record or its worldwide opening looks like a steep challenge. Based on the current trend, Toxic appears more likely to open in the Rs. 15-20 crore net range in Hindi, while crossing Rs. 100 crore gross worldwide on Day 1 could be a close fight.
Where Toxic does have a genuine chance of creating history is Karnataka. If the promotional campaign catches fire, Yash’s home state could deliver record-breaking opening-day numbers even if the pan-India records remain out of reach.
