Hyderabad’s Metro Phase 2 project is facing delays and may take another five to six years to complete. Other cities like Chennai have already received approval for their metro projects, leaving Hyderabad residents concerned about traffic and urban growth.
The Telangana government has planned five new metro routes covering 76 km. However, the central government has not yet given final approval, which is holding up the project. Without the green light, construction cannot fully commence.
Funding is another major hurdle. The central government has not released its share of ₹3,524 crore, preventing the state from using its own funds of ₹5,874 crore or securing loans from banks to continue the work.
L&T, the company that completed Phase 1, suffered a loss of ₹3,500 crore and may not participate in Phase 2. This uncertainty adds further complications and slows down project progress.
Some preliminary work is happening in the Old City, including building clearance and compensation for affected residents. People hope the metro begins soon, as it is crucial for reducing traffic and supporting Hyderabad’s growth.
