Former IPS officer PV Sunil Kumar was recently questioned in the Raghu Rama Krishna Raju custodial torture case. The SIT investigating the matter examined him at the CCS in Guntur as part of the ongoing probe.
The case is linked to Raghu Rama’s allegation that he faced third degree torture while in custody. He claimed severe physical assault and an attempt on his life following his arrest on May 14, 2021.
Andhra Pradesh CID police arrested Raghu Rama in Hyderabad on sedition charges under IPC Section 124A. The arrest was based on allegations of making derogatory remarks and creating enmity through his statements.
After the change in government, the case was actively pursued again. PV Sunil Kumar was suspended to ensure he would not influence the investigation related to the allegations.
Amid these developments, Sunil Kumar made remarks targeting RRR on X. He linked his suspension to a recent Supreme Court decision involving Raghu Rama Krishna Raju.
The Supreme Court refused to quash the FIR related to alleged bank fraud involving Raghu Rama. It also lifted the stay on the case and allowed a CBI investigation to proceed.
Sunil Kumar shared a news channel video on X and raised the issue of equal justice. He argued that Raghu Rama should be suspended from all positions to allow a fair CBI probe.
He stated that his own suspension was meant to ensure a fair investigation. He added that similar standards should apply to Raghu Rama to convey that the law is equal for all.
However, this argument contains key factual gaps. The government earlier clarified that Sunil Kumar’s suspension was due to service rule violations.
Officials stated that the suspension was linked to multiple foreign trips undertaken without permission. It was not directly connected to the Raghu Rama Krishna Raju case.
Even if the suspension were viewed as necessary for a fair probe, the context differs. The investigation against Sunil Kumar involved state police where departmental influence was possible.
In contrast, the case against Raghu Rama is being investigated by a central agency. His positions are within the state system, limiting any direct influence over the CBI probe.
