ISM 2.0: Can CBN Turn Vizag Into India’s Chip Hub?

Vizag semiconductor manufacturing opportunity

The Centre’s ₹1.25 lakh crore push for the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM) 2.0 has opened a new window for states competing to become India’s chip manufacturing hubs.

For Andhra Pradesh, the opportunity is obvious. The bigger question is whether it can move fast enough.

Visakhapatnam already has an approved semiconductor packaging project and a dedicated semiconductor policy. That gives the state a head start, but not a guaranteed advantage.

The competition is intense. Gujarat, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka are all aggressively chasing the same investments. In this race, policies alone won’t be enough. Investors will look at land availability, power supply, water, logistics, skilled talent and, above all, how quickly projects move from approvals to construction.

That is where Chandrababu Naidu’s government will be tested.

Vizag has many of the ingredients needed to become a semiconductor hub. Its port, industrial base and engineering talent make it a strong contender. If more chip-related companies begin setting up operations, the city could gradually develop into a complete semiconductor ecosystem instead of remaining just a packaging destination.

For Andhra Pradesh, the stakes go beyond one industry. Semiconductor manufacturing brings high-value jobs, technology investments and long-term economic growth.

The Centre has created the opportunity. Whether Vizag emerges as India’s next chip hub will now depend largely on how quickly Andhra Pradesh can turn that opportunity into reality.
