The Bombay High Court has ordered the immediate removal of AI generated morphed images and videos of actor Shilpa Shetty. The court described the content as extremely disturbing and shocking. The directive aims to stop further circulation of the material online.
The order followed a suit filed by Shilpa Shetty seeking protection of her personality and privacy rights. She challenged the unauthorised use of her likeness across digital platforms. The case highlighted growing concerns around misuse of technology.
Justice Advait Sethna, who heard the matter, observed that the altered visuals were prima facie indecent and objectionable. The court noted that such content crossed acceptable limits. It stressed that dignity and consent cannot be compromised.
The High Court stated that no individual, especially a woman, can be portrayed in a manner that violates fundamental privacy rights. Such acts are unacceptable without knowledge or consent. The court emphasised the seriousness of digital abuse.
It further noted that such depictions can cause severe harm to reputation and public image. Public figures remain vulnerable to misuse of advanced tools. The court underlined the long term impact of such violations.
As part of the relief, websites and online platforms hosting the content were directed to remove the identified URLs. Immediate compliance was ordered. This step aims to prevent further damage.
The defendants were restrained from using Shilpa Shetty’s name, image, voice, likeness, or identifiable attributes without authorisation. The court made it clear that personality rights must be respected. Any violation would attract legal consequences.
In her plea, Shetty stated that AI tools were allegedly used to mimic her voice and mannerisms. The altered content was circulated for commercial and promotional purposes. She also sought damages of Rs 5 lakh from certain parties.
The ruling adds to increased judicial scrutiny of AI misuse and deepfake content. It reinforces legal safeguards for public figures. The order signals strong protection against unauthorised digital exploitation.
