Suicide Leading Cause of Death Among Youth In India

Suicide leading cause among Indian youth

A recent study by the Public Health Foundation of India (PHFI) revealed that suicide has become the leading cause of death among Indians aged 15 to 39. Many assume heart attacks or road accidents top the list, but the data tells a more painful truth.

The study shows that academic pressure and fear of failure are the two biggest reasons behind rising suicides among the youth. As India grows into a major global economy, young people are crushed under unrealistic expectations to succeed and meet family ambitions.

Society’s obsession with wealth and fame has created a culture where anything less is treated as failure. This constant comparison isolates young adults and drives them towards hopelessness and extreme decisions.

The rise of social media has worsened the problem. Online peer pressure and the need to appear perfect lead to mental health struggles that often go unnoticed and untreated. Over time, these hidden battles destroy confidence and push many to the edge.

Relationship issues and financial stress also play major roles. In states like Telangana, reports even show student suicides surpassing farmer suicides—a shocking reminder of how serious the problem has become.

Lack of emotional guidance and poor life-skills education are deepening the crisis. Parents and teachers need to stay connected, listen without judgment, and support young people during difficult times instead of dismissing their struggles.

Even today, therapy and counseling remain stigmatized in India. Changing this mindset is crucial. Encouraging open conversations about mental health and teaching children to seek help can save countless lives and offer hope where it’s most needed.
