Chennai Super Kings (CSK) is facing a legal challenge over the use of music and dialogues from popular Rajinikanth films in a promotional video.
The case was filed in the Madras High Court by Sun TV Network Limited, which owns the rights to the films Jailer, Jailer 2, and Coolie.
According to the company, CSK used songs, background music, and dialogues from these films without prior permission.
The content reportedly appeared in a promotional video released on the franchise’s social media platforms.
The video was part of CSK’s campaign to launch its new IPL jersey for the season.
Fans quickly noticed references from the Rajinikanth films in the promo. The music and dialogues used in the video sparked discussions online.
Sun TV Network Limited argued that the content was used without approval from the rights holder.
The company also pointed out that the video promoted the sale of the new CSK jersey, priced at Rs 2,399, which made the usage commercial in nature.
A legal notice was reportedly sent to Chennai Super Kings on March 1, asking the franchise to stop using the film content.
During the hearing on March 13, senior advocate J Ravindran, representing Sun TV Network, informed the court that the franchise had already removed the content after receiving the notice.
The company also submitted its agreement with composer Anirudh Ravichander, stating that it holds the rights to the music from these films.
The Madras High Court has taken note of the submissions from both sides.
The case will continue as the court examines the matter further.
Chennai Super Kings has often used references from popular Tamil films in its promotional campaigns. However, this instance has now led to a legal dispute.
