Parasakthi, Vaa Vaathiyaar Flop: What’s Box Office Demand?

Thalaivar Thambi Thalaimaiyil Pongal success

Jiiva’s fun filled commercial entertainer Thalaivar Thambi Thalaimaiyil directed by Nithish Sahadev released in theatres on January 15 as a Pongal special. The film opened to strong positive responses from both audiences and critics across Tamil Nadu.

This Pongal season initially looked weak for Kollywood. Parasakthi starring Sivakarthikeyan and Vaa Vaathiyaar starring Karthi failed to meet expectations. Both films performed only at an average level at the box office.

At that stage, trade circles feared a disappointing Pongal. However, Thalaivar Thambi Thalaimaiyil changed the narrative. The film witnessed strong footfalls and emerged as a clear box office success, rescuing the festival season for the industry.

Following this success, several Kollywood trackers on social media have urged filmmakers to focus more on fun filled commercial entertainers. They believe audience response clearly reflects a growing demand for lighter and engaging cinema.

The call comes after a mixed 2025 for Kollywood. While many big budget films failed, several medium budget projects turned profitable. Most of these successes belonged to the commercial entertainer space rather than experimental or serious cinema.

Films such as Madha Gaja Raja, Kudumbasthan, Dragon, Tourist Family, Thalaivan Thalaivii, Dude, and Aan Paavam Pollathathu performed well despite modest budgets.

Even among the recent Pongal releases, Thalaivar Thambi Thalaimaiyil stood out as the only pure commercial entertainer. Parasakthi followed a gritty narrative approach, while Vaa Vaathiyaar leaned into dark comedy and superhero elements.

Trackers say this clearly shows that audiences are craving comedy and entertainment. They believe filmmakers should prioritise such content in the coming months instead of relying heavily on dark or intense themes.

Post TTT, several fun filled entertainers are lined up in Kollywood. These include Tourist Family director Abishan Jeevinth’s acting debut With Love and Pradeep Ranganathan’s Love Insurance Kompany.

It remains to be seen whether these films can replicate the success of Thalaivar Thambi Thalaimaiyil and how Kollywood will shape its commercial strategy for the rest of 2026.
