What was expected to be one of the biggest blockbusters of the year has now emerged as one of its biggest disappointments. Thalapathy Vijay‘s farewell film, Jana Nayagan, has turned out to be a commercial failure at the global box office.
The film has performed particularly poorly in North America, where it is expected to finish with a gross of under $1.6 million. These numbers are deeply disappointing by Vijay’s own standards.
His previous release, The Greatest of All Time (GOAT), also received mixed-to-negative reviews but still collected around $3.48 million in North America. Jana Nayagan is unlikely to finish with even half that total.
After 12 days, the film has grossed around Rs. 300 crore worldwide and is now expected to end its theatrical run below Rs. 325 crore.
Considering its reported budget and massive pre-release theatrical business, trade estimates suggest Jana Nayagan needed at least Rs. 450 crore worldwide gross to emerge as a commercial success. The film is a loss-making venture for all concerned.
Fans have pointed to repeated release delays, the HD print leak, and stiff competition as contributing factors. However, the biggest reason appears to be the film’s content, which failed to generate the strong word of mouth needed to sustain collections despite Vijay’s immense star power.
Ironically, Jana Nayagan was marketed as Vijay’s final film before entering full-time politics, a factor many believed would guarantee record-breaking collections. Instead, the farewell sentiment proved no match for the film’s disastrous word of mouth.
In absolute numbers, Jana Nayagan may still rank among the year’s highest-grossing Tamil films. But relative to its budget, expectations, and Vijay’s own box office history, it has fallen well short. For a film that was expected to create history, ending up as a commercial disappointment is a painful outcome.
