US Uni Cuts PhD Funds: Indian’s F-1 Status at Risk

F-1 visa student SEVIS crisis

A PhD student from India on an F-1 visa is now facing SEVIS termination after their university cut funding. The student had completed their previous degree with a 4.0 GPA and then started their doctoral programme.

Funding withdrawn without warning

The university informed the student that they could no longer offer funding for the PhD. The sudden update forced the student to withdraw. With almost no notice, they were unable to apply elsewhere for the spring intake, which has already closed.

SEVIS status now in danger

Because they are not enrolled in any course, the student cannot transfer their SEVIS record or maintain F-1 status. They are running out of time before termination becomes official.

Two possible paths to protect status

Experts note two options. The student can allow SEVIS termination and then apply for reinstatement once they secure a new PhD offer for Summer 2025. This is possible since the termination happened for reasons beyond their control.

The alternative option is costly

The second option is to immediately transfer the SEVIS record to a Tier 3 school. The programme may be unrelated, such as an MBA, and this is done only to keep the SEVIS record active. The student can then re-transfer to a funded PhD later.

A difficult decision with major risks

The reinstatement route is risky as approval is not guaranteed. The bridge school option is expensive and does not contribute to the student’s academic goals. The student is now caught in a severe dilemma between two difficult choices.
