
The Republicans are hell-bent on their agenda against the immigrants. Now, they are not just making new policies but looking to revert any existing ones that are beneficial to the Indian workers in the US.
Republican senators John Kennedy and Rick Scott have introduced a resolution to roll back a Biden-era rule that extended the automatic renewal of work permits from 180 to 540 days. They call this extension “insane” and a “dangerous rule” that allows “illegal aliens” to hold jobs for over a year.

If the rule is reversed, thousands of Indian H-1B spouses and green card applicants could lose their right to work much sooner. Many families already stuck in visa backlogs are now at further risk of sudden job losses and financial stress.
The rule, which was only introduced last December by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), was mainly to prevent work disruptions for H-1B and L-1 spouses, asylum seekers, and other skilled immigrants.

Democrats still insist the extension helps businesses fill labor shortages and prevents employment gaps. Moreover, DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas also argues it’s help in cutting red tape and keeping the economy running.
However, with Republican pressure mounting, the uncertainty is back. Indian families in the US may once again find themselves caught in America’s bureaucratic battle against immigrants.
