Actress and anchor Anasuya Bharadwaj is once again making headlines for her views on social issues. Known for speaking openly on social media, Anasuya has now questioned some traditional practices followed by women after their husbands die.
In a video shared on Instagram, Anasuya spoke about why women are expected to remove their bindi, bangles and anklets after their husbands pass away.
Anasuya recalled that her father passed away three years ago. She said her mother used to dress beautifully, wearing a bindi, colorful bangles and anklets. After her husband’s death, however, she stopped wearing them.
Anasuya questioned why these things are linked to marriage in the first place.
She pointed out that women are introduced to bindis, kajal, bangles, anklets, mehndi and nail polish by their mothers and grandmothers even before marriage. If women grow up with these things, she questioned why they should suddenly become unacceptable after their husband dies.
She also asked: Where is it written that a widow must remove these things? According to Anasuya, if these practices were truly connected to the death of a family member, then a woman should also stop wearing them after losing her mother or grandmother.
However, Anasuya made it clear that she was not trying to attack anyone’s beliefs. She said these are her personal thoughts and that every woman should have the freedom to decide how she wants to live.
Her comments come shortly after her remarks on Sanatana Dharma and Hinduism sparked a major debate on social media. Senior actress Hema and others had slammed her views.
Some people are supporting Anasuya and believe women should be free to make their own choices. Others believe these traditional practices have cultural and emotional importance and should be respected.
Either way, Anasuya has once again raised a sensitive issue that many people usually avoid discussing openly.
