After focusing on teacher training and sending 29 government school teachers to Finland, Education Minister Nara Lokesh is now turning attention to another area that often gets less focus in schools, girls’ sports.
His new initiative, ‘She Play’, aims to encourage more girls in government schools to take up sports and give them better opportunities to develop their talent.
Lokesh announced the initiative during his interaction with students at Chandrampalem in Visakhapatnam. The idea is simple. Many girls have talent, but they may not have proper playgrounds, equipment, coaching or enough encouragement to take sports seriously.
If ‘She Play’ can identify talented girls early and give them access to coaching and competitions, it could create a strong talent base from government schools.
It also fits into Lokesh’s wider approach to education. The focus is not only on marks and examinations, but also on giving students opportunities to discover their skills and interests.
The real impact will depend on how widely the programme reaches. A girl studying in an ordinary government school should be able to get the same chance to play, train and compete as students in better-equipped schools.
If ‘She Play’ can make that possible, it could become an important addition to AP’s school education system.
For now, the initiative has a simple goal. Give more girls a chance to play, compete and discover what they can do.
