Gunn Clears DCU Timelines: Batman Film Removed

James Gunn on DCU Batman decision

James Gunn has clarified that Robert Pattinson’s Batman will not be part of the main DCU. Many fans feel this is the right move, as it protects the distinct creative identity built by Matt Reeves through The Batman and its expanding universe.

Matt Reeves’ version of Batman is grounded and rooted in crime and psychological realism. Gotham is shown as grim, claustrophobic, and damaged. Pattinson’s Bruce Wayne fits this tone perfectly, making the world feel closer to Se7en than a traditional superhero crossover.

James Gunn’s DCU, on the other hand, is shaping up to be more comic driven. Gods, aliens, and larger mythologies are central to this vision. This heightened approach works for a shared universe but differs greatly from Reeves’ grounded storytelling style.

Forcing Pattinson’s Batman into the DCU could weaken what makes the character compelling. It may dilute Reeves’ narrative depth, disrupt Pattinson’s performance, and interfere with the long-term crime saga planned through sequels and spin-offs.

Keeping this Batman as an Elseworlds story allows it to flourish independently. The separation also prevents tonal confusion and gives space for a separate DCU Batman to emerge without creative overlap.

By clearly dividing these universes, Gunn ensures both visions can succeed. Reeves continues a focused and realistic saga, while the DCU explores a more fantastical direction. This clarity ultimately benefits the character and the audience.
