The thunderous reception of RGV’s online release ‘Climax’ has got him talking about the digital model he has used and how it would work for other filmmakers, especially, focusing on Rajamouli and his RRR.
RGV fixed the ticket rate at Rs. 100 for ‘Climax’ and there are reports that he has been thinking of increasing it to Rs. 200. Relating his experience to Rajamouli, RGV sees that the pan-Indian director’s craze can command Rs. 1000 per ticket.
That implies if one crore people watch Rajamouli’s RRR, he would earn Rs. 1000 crores and the money would go directly to the makers without having to pay for intermediate people like distributors, theatre owners etc.
The business model proposed by the eccentric genius is great. However, would it be that simple for magnum opuses like RRR that come with huge budgets? The budget range of RGV’s films for digital platforms is peanuts comparatively.
What would happen to the theatre owners and can industry sacrifice the theatrical experience for the audiences? Can any digital platform give the same experience like watching a film on a big screen in theatres? There are a lot of questions.
