Sandeep Reddy Vanga, after delivering Animal, has grabbed the nation’s attention and is currently second only to Rajamouli and Prashanth Neel in the Pan-India directors’ league.
In a YouTube interview with a Bollywood film critic, Sandeep was asked why he didn’t consider bringing his Kabir Singh hero, Shahid Kapoor, into Animal for a cameo.
The interviewer pointed out that in Kabir Singh, Shahid plays a doctor, while in Animal, Ranbir’s character goes through significant health issues. A scene where the two meet could have worked wonders.
Sandeep immediately agreed with the idea, revealing that he had, in fact, discussed it with his team, and they were excited about the possibility of a brief Kabir Singh cameo. However, he later decided against it, realizing that it would feel forced and could disrupt the serious tone of the film. Even though the cameo might have worked, he chose not to include it.
Speaking of cameos, this serves as a valuable lesson for Nag Ashwin regarding his Kalki 2898 AD with Prabhas.
Director Nag Ashwin included over half a dozen unnecessary cameos, including one by Ram Gopal Varma, which made Kalki feel less serious despite the film staying true to its core narrative. These excessive cameos diluted the impact of his storytelling.
Sandeep’s reasoning makes perfect sense—he could have easily included Shahid Kapoor in Animal for a scene, which would have set the screen on fire with both stars together. Yet, he refrained because it would have felt forced.
Surprisingly, with a massive-budget film like Kalki 2898 AD, Nag Ashwin and his team didn’t seem to consider this aspect. However, given the criticism surrounding the cameos after the film’s release, he may avoid making the same mistake in the sequel.
