Maya OSThe Indian Defence Ministry is revamping its cybersecurity by replacing Windows with a new OS called Maya on internet-connected computers in response to increasing malware and ransomware threats.

Maya OS is based on Ubuntu, a secure Linux distribution, and was developed in collaboration with government agencies like DRDO, C-DAC, and NIC. It mimics Windows’ interface and functionality and includes Chakravyuh, an anti-malware software creating a barrier against hackers.

The Navy has approved Maya OS, and the Army and Air Force are evaluating it. Maya OS will be deployed in South Block by August 15, gradually expanding to other systems by year-end.

Utilizing an indigenous OS could enhance cybersecurity, reduce reliance on foreign software, and boost cyber resilience for India’s critical systems.
