Hyderabad has reported another case of cyber fraud, this time targeting an elderly man from Ameerpet. An 81-year-old retired person lost Rs7.11 lakh after being trapped in an online honey trap scam.
According to police, the victim first received a WhatsApp message from a woman named Maya Rajput. Casual chats soon turned into frequent conversations, leading to emotional bonding and trust.
The fraudsters later exploited this connection. They claimed money was urgently needed for medical expenses and to release pledged gold ornaments. The victim, believing their story, transferred money multiple times.
Over a few weeks, the scammers collected Rs7.11 lakh. Convinced he was helping someone in distress, the elderly man continued sending money, unaware of the fraud.
The truth came out when his family noticed unusual withdrawals. After confronting him, they learned about the scam and helped him file a complaint with the Cybercrime police.
Officials have registered a case and are tracing the culprits. Police have also appealed to citizens, especially seniors, to remain cautious about unknown calls and messages online.
This case highlights the growing danger of honey trap scams and the vulnerability of elderly people to such manipulative digital frauds.
