An Indian-origin doctor was charged in Sydney, Australia, for asking inappropriate questions of a female patient and conducting a physical examination without her consent. In retaliation, the doctor is now suing the patient for $20 million in charges of blackmail.

The woman later alleged that the doctor had asked her several obscene questions like, “How many sexual partners have you had?” and “When did you first become sexually active?” and “How many of your boyfriends were Nepalese, and how many were Australian?”
In addition, the doctor was also accused of conducting a physical examination without the woman’s explicit consent.

After leaving the clinic, the woman discussed this incident with her partner in tears and filed a formal complaint with the Health Care Complaints Commission two days later.
In light of the accusations, the New South Wales Civil and Administrative Tribunal (NACT) held a trial, where the doctor was found guilty of “unsatisfactory professional conduct” and “professional misconduct.”

This led to a three-year ban on his medical practice.
In a shocking turn of events, Dr. Balasingham has now denied all the allegations leveled against him and has filed a 20 million dollar suit in the court.
He claims that the HCCC fabricated false allegations against him and the woman tried to blackmail him.
As the court battle continues, the story has raised some important questions about patient safety, professionalism, and abuse of power.
Moreover, it’s commendable how the Sydney authorities are taking patient safety seriously, setting a strong example with their thorough and timely investigation.
