Arranged marriage scams are increasing, and Hyderabad Police have issued a strong warning to women and parents to stay alert. With complaints rising, especially to She Teams, officials say families must be extra careful during the arranged marriage process.
According to police, fraudsters usually approach families through traditional arranged marriage channels. They may come through relatives, matrimony websites, or community contacts. At first, everything looks genuine. Formal family meetings are arranged. The groom’s background is presented in a polished and convincing way. They create a good impression and gain trust quickly.
In many cases, the engagement is rushed. Once the engagement is done, the accused tries to build emotional closeness. He may push for private meetings and say things like, “We are getting married anyway,” to justify physical intimacy. Emotional pressure follows, and in some cases, even coercion is involved.
After intimacy happens, behavior changes. Suddenly, new financial demands are raised. The groom or his family may ask for heavy cash, extra dowry, expensive gifts, or property. They threaten to cancel the wedding if demands are not met. They depend on the family’s fear of social embarrassment, especially after the engagement is publicly announced. Harassment continues until money is paid or the victim gathers the courage to complain.
Police clearly advise families to independently verify the groom’s details, including job, income, and background. They also advise avoiding giving money outside legal norms. Treat sudden financial demands or pressure for premarital intimacy as serious red flags.
Authorities have also highlighted a more dangerous trend in some districts like Prakasam. Fraudsters target young girls from poor families by promising good marriage proposals. After gaining trust, they take the girls to other cities such as Hyderabad, Mumbai, or even abroad and force them into prostitution. Some criminals use fake photos, false job offers, or sweet talk to trap families. Victims often face physical and mental abuse and find it difficult to escape.
Police urge girls not to go alone with unknown people. Always verify proposals through trusted contacts. If something suspicious happens, report it immediately. Awareness and caution are the best protection.
