A student from IIT Hyderabad recently sparked online debate after sending a shocking email to grab a recruiter’s attention. The computer science student emailed Legitt AI founder and CEO Harshdeep Rapal with the subject line, “Your name is in the Epstein Files.”
The email was meant as a prank to stand out in a crowded inbox. The student clarified the intent in the first line itself, writing that it was a joke meant only to ensure the email was opened.
He then introduced himself as a student seeking an employment opportunity and praised Legitt AI’s Smart Contracts Assistant. The student also attached his resume and requested a discussion regarding potential work opportunities.
Harshdeep Rapal did not appreciate the approach and shared a redacted screenshot of the email on social media. He described the tactic as unprofessional and called it a shortcut that has no place in serious job applications.
The CEO also criticised the use of references linked to the Jeffrey Epstein scandal. He highlighted that the issue involves grave crimes such as sex trafficking, child abuse, and exploitation, making it an insensitive subject to joke about.
Public reaction to the incident was largely critical of the student’s actions. Many users called the attempt unethical and desperate, warning that such behaviour could damage one’s professional reputation permanently.
One user remarked that the tactic was manipulative rather than clever. Others said it felt like a gimmick and was especially disappointing given the student’s association with a reputed institution like IIT.
A smaller group defended the prank, calling it a creative attempt in a competitive job market. They argued that standing out has become increasingly difficult for students applying for limited roles.
Hardeep later urged students to focus on genuine skill development instead of shock value. The incident also reignited discussions around internet etiquette and the pressures faced by job seekers in India’s tech sector.
