An Indian techie working in Russia has gone viral after revealing his unexpected career shift. The video shocked many online as it showed a former software developer now sweeping streets for a higher salary than his IT job.
The video features 26-year-old Mukesh Mandal, who moved from India to Russia in search of better pay. He was one among 17 individuals who relocated with the same goal.
Mandal is part of a group of Indian workers cleaning streets in St. Petersburg. They have been doing this work for several weeks. The group is employed by the road maintenance company Kolomyazhskoye.
Although Mandal previously worked in advanced technology roles in India, he found employment as a street sweeper after moving to Russia. The company arranged food and accommodation for all 17 workers.
They earn around 100,000 rubles per month, which is approximately ₹1.1 lakh. This salary detail surprised many viewers and sparked intense discussion on social media.
A Fontanka report revealed that the group has diverse backgrounds. Some were farmers, while others were business owners. The group also includes a wedding planner, a tanner, drivers, architects, and others.
When asked about his decision, Mandal said the nature of work does not matter to him. He stated that work is like worship and can be done anywhere. According to him, doing one’s duty sincerely is most important.
At first glance, many see such choices as foolish. Questions arise about why skilled professionals would leave their fields to do manual labour abroad.
However, this reflects a wider reality. Thousands of Indians migrate every year seeking better pay and stability. Many fail to find success and struggle in low-paying or unstable jobs with little savings.
This trend is driven by overpopulation and limited employment opportunities in India. Labour exploitation remains common. The situation highlights deeper systemic issues that continue to affect livelihoods across the country.
