Korean filmmakers and arts organizers have called for a probe into the tragic passing of Parasite star Lee Sun-kyun, who died of a suspected suicide at the age of 48. Lee was under investigation by police for alleged illicit drug usage, but he rejected the charges. Arts organizers in Seoul are hosting a media event to urge an investigation into the circumstances of his death.
The Organization of Support Among Cultural Artists, an association of 29 renowned arts and cultural organizations, has urged the Korean media and local government to prevent tragedies like Lee’s. The organization advocates for an investigation, for media outlets to remove false material, and for legislation to defend artists’ human rights.
Lee, a well-known Korean director, has been detained in Seoul for drug usage, drawing international attention to South Korea’s severe drug regulations. The case, which has resulted in a spike in arrests and heightened societal shame, was attended by Parasite filmmaker Bong Joon Ho, actor Choi Deok-moon, and Korean Producers Guild president Choi Jeong-Hwa.
Lee, nicknamed “The Voice” for his distinctive baritone speaking voice, was a well-known Korean actor best recognized for his part in Parasite, a black comedy thriller released in 2019. His death has raised debate about mental health and the societal constraints experienced by Korean artists, who have a high suicide rate. Lee’s part in Dr. Brain and Sleep, a horror drama, has gained him international attention and honors.
