Halwa Launching in Space

India is set to mark a historic return to space with Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla embarking on the Ax-4 mission to the International Space Station (ISS).

The mission, organized by Axiom Space in collaboration with NASA and SpaceX, is scheduled to launch from Kennedy Space Center, Florida, on June 11 at 5:30 pm. The launch was delayed due to poor weather conditions.

Shukla will be accompanied by three other astronauts, Mission Commander Peggy Whitson from the United States, Slawosz Uznanski-Wisniewski from Poland, and Tibor Kapu from Hungary.

During the 14-day mission, the crew will focus on scientific research in health, materials science, and space technology.

In a heartwarming twist, Shukla will carry with him traditional Indian food specially developed for space by ISRO and DRDO.

The menu includes favorites like moong dal halwa, gajar ka halwa, aamras, and rice. These meals are space-friendly, requiring rehydration before consumption, and have been carefully tailored for zero-gravity conditions.

Initially, due to the high spice levels in Indian cuisine, the astronaut was not allowed to carry such dishes. However, after adjustments, some of them were approved. Shukla, a fitness enthusiast and yoga practitioner, is expected to enjoy the treats in moderation.

This customized Indian menu is also being considered for the upcoming Gaganyaan mission in 2027.

As the countdown begins, Shukla’s family is full of pride and prayers. “It feels good that people are talking about my son,” said his father. The entire country joins them in wishing for a successful and safe mission.
