Safety Feature ABS for Bikes: Lifesaving or New Way to Loot Public

The Indian government is planning to make ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) mandatory for all two-wheelers, including entry-level bikes and scooters.

This step is being considered to improve road safety and reduce the high number of two-wheeler accidents across the country.

Currently, ABS is only required in bikes above 125cc. Under the new proposal, all manufacturers will need to install ABS in every model they produce.

ABS prevents wheel lock during sudden braking. This helps reduce skidding and gives better control, especially on wet or uneven roads.

Officials from the Ministry of Road Transport are expected to release detailed guidelines and timelines soon.

While the move is largely welcomed, some discussions on social media raise concerns. People are questioning whether this rule could also lead to increased fines for non-compliance in the future.

There are also worries that this may raise the cost of budget two-wheelers, which are widely used by daily commuters.

Experts argue that road safety upgrades do come with added costs, but the benefits—especially in terms of lives saved—are far greater.

The government is likely to allow a reasonable transition period to help both consumers and manufacturers adjust.

If implemented smoothly, this could become a key step toward safer roads and better riding standards in India.

The aim, officials say, is not to burden the public but to ensure that essential safety features are available to every rider—regardless of the bike’s price.
