ODIs Fading, T20 Rising? ICC’s Big Plan

ICC discusses ODI and T20 format changes

The International Cricket Council (ICC) is considering several major changes that could reshape the future of cricket.

The proposals will reportedly be discussed at the ICC Annual General Meeting in Edinburgh as part of a review to make the sport stronger across all formats.

According to reports one of the biggest ideas is to reduce the length of ODI matches. Instead of 50 overs per side, ODIs could become 40 over games with one new ball. The innings break could also be shortened, making matches finish around 100 minutes earlier.

Another proposal is to limit bilateral ODI cricket to only the 18 months before every 50 over World Cup. This would significantly reduce the number of ODI series played during a four year cycle.

The ICC is also discussing a new global franchise T20 tournament, similar to the old Champions League T20.

More continental tournaments, such as the Asia Cup, are also part of the discussions. In addition, the World Test Championship could be expanded to 12 teams, with separate windows planned for Tests, ODIs and T20Is.

The discussions come as T20 cricket continues to grow in popularity. Many believe the ODI format needs changes to stay relevant, but others feel its rich history should not be lost.
