In a recent survey conducted by NOP World Culture Score Index, India has emerged as the leading country in terms of reading habits. The findings have left the world stunned and scratching their heads, as India beats out 30 major nations, including highly literate countries like Finland, Norway, and Denmark.
According to the survey, Indians spend a whopping 10.4 hours per week indulging in the written word. That’s equivalent to an average of one and a half hours of reading every single day! Trailing behind India are Thailand and China, with respectable reading times of 9.24 and 8 hours per week, respectively.
But what sets India apart from the rest? Well, for one, Indian authors have been making waves on the global stage. With literary gems like Arvind Adiga, who won the prestigious Man Booker Prize for “The White Tiger,” it’s no wonder that the Indian publishing industry is thriving. Perhaps Indians are simply inspired by their talents at home.
Additionally, the rise of e-books has played a significant role in India’s reading revolution. Thanks to the accessibility of platforms like Kindle, readers can easily dive into their favorite books with just a few taps on their smartphones.
As we celebrate India’s reading, let’s not forget that literacy rates in the country have room for improvement. With a literacy rate of 74.04%, India is still working towards empowering every citizen with the gift of reading. Nonetheless, this survey showcases the passion and enthusiasm that Indians have for the written word.
So, whether it’s a captivating novel, an inspiring biography, or a hilarious comic book, one thing is clear: India’s love affair with reading is here to stay!
