Twitter has threatened legal action against Meta, the parent company of Instagram, over its newly introduced text-based platform called Threads.
Twitter’s lawyer accuses Meta of poaching former Twitter employees to create a “copycat” application and unlawfully misappropriating Twitter’s trade secrets and intellectual property. Twitter demands that Meta cease using its confidential information.
Meta denies the allegations, stating that none of its Threads engineering team consists of former Twitter employees.
Twitter’s legal action on Threads indicates that Threads could potentially become the most significant rival to Elon Musk’s Twitter.
Since Musk acquired Twitter, there has been a growing discontent among users due to his right-leaning political stance and a decline in the user experience. Alternative platforms like PostNews, Mastodon, and Bluesky have struggled to gain widespread popularity and attract a large user base.
But ‘Threads’ sems to pose a significant challenge to Twitter, attracting 30 million users within its first day and potentially drawing users and advertising revenue away from Twitter.
Meta, with its vast resources and access to billions of Instagram users, has the ability to compete with Twitter and has a history of successful copycat ventures like Instagram Stories and Reels.
