Recent reports suggest that Prime Video has cancelled the second season of its acclaimed legal drama Guilty Minds, which was being developed by the streamer after being commissioned internally.
The 2022 show, written and directed by Shefali Bhushan and Jayant Digambar Somalkar, was a breakout title. It received widespread praise for its authenticity, performances, and writing.
However, the streaming platform felt that the second season required a budget that wasn’t feasible in the current entertainment landscape.
According to multiple sources, post-pandemic, many streaming platforms are facing the impact of the industry’s course correction. As a result, several shows are either being shelved or commissioned with smaller budgets.
Just last week, Netflix pulled the plug on the second season of its survival thriller Kaala Paani, just days before pre-production. The show had originally been renewed in 2023.
Taking to social media, fans have expressed their disappointment over how their favourite shows are being cancelled.
They find it astonishing that impactful and meaningful stories are being given the red light, while streaming platforms continue to fund substance-less content.
Others have pointed out that even theatrical releases haven’t been exceptional lately, and now, the few quality shows that did exist are being axed. In such a scenario, they ask- Where is the audience supposed to go to find good entertainment?
This is a crucial time for the industry. It is trying to evolve and shift with the times, but change is never easy. The audience can only hope that better days lie ahead and that the changes to come will ultimately be for the better.
