Forced Comedy Universe Backlash? Ruining Classics?

Firoz Nadiadwala Family Universe

Producer Firoz Nadiadwala has announced a new “Family Universe” linking Welcome, Hera Pheri, Aan, Awara Paagal Deewana, and Deewane Huye Paagal. The plan is to merge crossover characters with extended comedy plots. Yet, the concept feels out of step with today’s cinema.

Shared universes work in genres like horror or espionage because they rely on suspense and unpredictable twists. Each film feels fresh, keeping you engaged. A comedy-driven “Family Universe,” however, leans heavily on nostalgia, which is no longer enough to attract younger audiences.

The days of Hum Aapke Hain Koun and Hum Saath Saath Hain defined family drama. That audience enjoyed emotional predictability and happy endings. Gen Z looks for mystery, layered storytelling, and surprises. Predictable comedy arcs struggle to hold their attention today.

Although Welcome and Hera Pheri remain cult favourites, stretching them into a vast “Family Universe” risks diluting their charm. Recycling old jokes in multiple films may come across as forced, stripping away the originality that made these classics memorable.

Bollywood should focus on sharp writing and genres that reflect current tastes rather than cloning Hollywood’s model. If you already know how a story will unfold, no crossover packaging or nostalgic branding can save it from feeling stale.
