Ramayana: Can Devotees Accept Lord Rama as Human?

Ramayana film sparks debate on Rama portrayal

The upcoming Ramayana film has already sparked debate with its creative choices. Makers have confirmed that the story will remain rooted in Valmiki’s Ramayana, regarded as the most authentic version of the epic, while taking a different approach from traditional portrayals.

Unlike Tulsidas’ Ramcharitmanas, which presents Ram as divine, this version will show him as a human being. The film highlights his struggles, sacrifices, and emotions, aiming to humanise him as a son, husband, and king rather than only a deity.

The makers are also drawing from multiple versions of the epic to expand on certain characters. Surpanakha, Vidyutjivha, and Sumali are reportedly being fleshed out with expert input, adding fresh perspectives while opening room for debates about authenticity.

This interpretation seeks to make Ram emotionally relatable for modern audiences. By showing his vulnerabilities and challenges, the film aims to bridge devotion with realism, though this approach risks clashing with those who view him as an infallible divine figure.

The larger question remains whether devotees can accept Lord Rama as a human first and god later. If handled sensitively, the film could bring depth and freshness, but careless execution might lead to controversy over faith and tradition.
