Shahid Kapoor’s latest release O’Romeo opened with strong curiosity but failed to meet expectations. Despite the initial buzz, the film struggled to cross Rs 60 crore at the domestic box office.
Trade analysts believe the film’s promise did not translate into sustained audience interest. Several experts have now shared detailed reasons behind the film’s underwhelming theatrical run.
Trade veteran Taran Adarsh felt the film had quality moments but lacked overall impact. He stated that a shorter and more concise version was required to keep viewers engaged.
According to him, the Spanish track could have been reduced. While the storyline was interesting, the narration failed to maintain consistency from start to finish, which audiences could clearly sense.
Taran also felt the film struggled to balance mass and class elements. He pointed out that such subjects demand a clear direction, and hesitation in approach often affects audience connection.
Producer and film business analyst Girish Johar shared a similar view. He observed that the first half reflected the director’s signature style, while the second half shifted towards commercial cinema.
This tonal shift, according to Girish, prevented the film from being either a strong artistic piece or a full commercial entertainer. The audience remained divided throughout.
He also noted that performances by Tripti Dimrii and Nana Patekar were solid. However, the background score failed to support key scenes effectively.
For Girish, Disha Patani’s role was completely wasted. He also felt the Spain portions added little value to the narrative.
Taran Adarsh added that a memorable chartbuster, similar to “Dhan Te Nan” from Kaminey, could have significantly boosted recall. Its absence surprised many, given the director’s reputation for strong music.
Trade analyst Atul Mohan differed slightly on the music aspect. He felt the songs were acceptable and appreciated that they were original compositions rather than remixes.
Distributor and exhibitor Raj Bansal stated that the director has never been known for commercial cinema. He felt weak music further hurt the film’s prospects despite Shahid Kapoor’s popularity.
Most trade voices agreed that the film’s numbers were far below expectations. Taran Adarsh pointed out that offering BOGO tickets in the first week itself signalled trouble and suggested such offers should come later.
Despite strong pre-release expectations, O’Romeo ended up disappointing both audiences and insiders. Its box office performance has now become one of the biggest shocks of 2026.
