Vidya Balan is often described as one of Bollywood’s most underrated performers. She has taken bold creative leaps with films such as The Dirty Picture, Shakuntala Devi, Mission Mangal, and No One Killed Jessica, showcasing her range and courage. This year, her debut film Parineeta completes 20 years, prompting a special theatrical re-release on August 29.
Reflecting on this milestone, Vidya became emotional as she thanked director Pradeep Sarkar and producer Vidhu Vinod Chopra for believing in her when few others did. She shared that following Parineeta, she faced criticism for not fitting the industry’s trend-focused image norms. Unlike actresses being marketed as sleek and modern, she was told she looked too traditional.
Vidya revealed that even directors who cast her in lighter films like Heyy Babyy and Kismat Konnection pressured her to appear sexier and younger. In one instance, she recalled being asked to lose weight and look younger than Shahid Kapoor, who was two years younger, to avoid appearing older on screen.
For many years, Vidya was glossed over for leading roles, likely because she didn’t conform to mainstream beauty standards. Yet she persisted, building a filmography that stands on voice, depth, and performance—not superficial attributes.
Despite persistent image-based judgments, Vidya has emerged as one of the most inspiring and brave actresses in Indian cinema. Her career has consistently affirmed that talent, integrity, and fearless storytelling matter far more than appearance.
