Dharman Controversy: Rajinikanth Rejected the Better Script?

Rajinikanth Dharman first look poster

Rajinikanth’s upcoming film Dharman, directed by Ashwath Marimuthu, has become a major topic of discussion since its first-look poster was unveiled. While fans welcomed the announcement, many social media users felt the title and poster did not meet their expectations. The reactions have sparked widespread debate online.

Rajinikanth’s 173rd film was originally planned with director Sundar C, and the project was officially announced. Later, Sundar C exited the film and Cibi Chakaravarthi took over. Due to unforeseen circumstances, he also stepped away, after which Ashwath Marimuthu came on board and the project finally moved forward as Dharman.

At the film’s grand launch event, Rajinikanth explained why the director changed during the project’s development. He revealed that Cibi Chakaravarthi’s script revolved around a nuclear weapon and a World War 3 concept. Since the film required a lengthy production schedule, he decided to postpone it and proceed with Ashwath Marimuthu’s project instead.

Following Rajinikanth’s explanation, some social media users criticised his decision. They argued that Cibi Chakaravarthi’s script appeared fresher and more ambitious for Kollywood. In comparison, they felt Dharman looked like a conventional commercial entertainer.

Some users also claimed that original ideas often struggle to receive recognition in the film industry. They suggested that filmmakers with unique concepts sometimes lose opportunities to more commercially appealing projects. These opinions have fuelled the ongoing discussion across social media platforms.

At the same time, many fans have defended Ashwath Marimuthu and supported Rajinikanth’s choice. They believe Ashwath is a talented filmmaker who deserves the opportunity. Several users also compared the directors’ previous works, with some praising Dragon over Cibi Chakaravarthi’s Don.

The debate continues to gain momentum online, with opinions divided between both filmmakers. While one section believes Rajinikanth overlooked a stronger script, another supports his decision to collaborate with Ashwath Marimuthu. The discussion is expected to continue as Dharman progresses towards release.
