In a recent unique incident, PVR Inox has been fined for wasting the time of a Bengaluru man by showing too many commercial advertisements before the actual start of the film.
This surprising judgement came after the man, who had gone to watch Sam Bahadur, sued PVR Inox for wasting his time while causing him mental agony by forcing 25 minutes of unwarranted commercial advertisements on him.
The court directed PVR Inox to pay the man a sum of Rs. 28,000, including the cost incurred in filing the complaint.
In addition to this, the multiplex giant also had to face a Rs.1 Lakh fine for punitive damages while being directed to display the actual timings of the shows on the tickets.
The bench said, “In the new era, time is considered as money, each one’s time is very precious, no one has right to gain benefit out of others time and money. 25-30 minutes is not less to sit idle in the theatre and watch whatever the theatre telecasts…
…It is very hard for busy people with tight schedule watching unnecessary advertisements. However, they make their own arrangements to get some relaxation with family. This does not mean that people have no other work to do.”
The court also rejected PVR’s defence claim of showing extended advertisements to facilitate people who arrive late due to security delays.
Events like this work to further cement the public’s faith in the judiciary, even when the fight is against mega giants like PVR Inox.
