He then moved on to talk about the three language formula. Pawan shared Andhra Pradesh had 30 Tamil, 107 Odiya, 57 Kannada, 5 Sanskrit, 400 Urdu and more than 37,000 language schools. The idea was to promote education in their mother tongue. But it was not right to impose a language when asked about Tamil people’s fear of Hindi. If someone imposes a language, I will be the one to oppose it, he said. He gave his own example saying he learnt Tamil not by force, but by choice.

He said he knew Telugu, Hindi and English and added that this helped him in many instances. In fact, after learning Hindi, my proficiency in Telugu increased, he said. When one does not fear learning Britishers’ English, why fear Hindi, he questioned. He brushed aside apprehensions about many languages losing out to Hindi in the north.
