India’s Leadership Under Fire: No Faith in T20 VC?

Axar Patel dropped from India XI

India’s leadership decisions in the T20 World Cup have come under sharp scrutiny. Former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra questioned the management’s decision to sideline vice-captain Axar Patel.

Chopra openly expressed confusion over Axar’s exclusion from the playing eleven. He pointed out that Axar holds the vice-captaincy and was dropped simply due to the presence of three left-handed batters in the opposition.

He compared the decision with South Africa’s approach. Chopra noted that the Proteas did not drop Keshav Maharaj despite facing a similar situation, showing greater clarity in selection.

Chopra’s comments have found strong support among fans. Many recalled Axar’s crucial knock in the 2024 T20 World Cup final, where he scored 47 runs off 31 balls and kept India’s hopes alive under pressure.

Even while considering the left-handed batters in the Protean line up, the matchup argument appeared weak. Only David Miller posed a possible challenge, while Quinton de Kock and Ryan Rickelton were dismissed early.

The decision has raised concerns that Indian management is relying too heavily on numbers. Critics feel that paper statistics are being trusted more than proven match winners.

The confusion deepened with the handling of Washington Sundar. Though brought in to replace Axar Patel, he was allowed to bowl only two overs, suggesting a lack of confidence.

Such hesitation reflects panic rather than planning. At the international level, teams must back their players and show belief instead of constant chopping and changing under pressure.
