When a celebration turns into tragedy, what should a team do? That’s the question haunting Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) after the stampede outside Chinnaswamy Stadium on June 4.
The victory parade, meant to honour RCB’s first IPL trophy, ended with 11 lives lost and 75 others injured. In response, RCB launched a new initiative called ‘RCB CARES’, but reactions have been mixed.
RCB’s Financial Pledge and Its Impact
RCB has pledged Rs 25 lakh each to the families of those who died. They called this more than financial help; it’s a “promise of compassion, unity, and ongoing care.” This is a sharp increase from the Rs 10 lakh originally offered.
But fans have questioned if Rs 25 lakh is enough, given that an IPL franchise and the league earn thousands of crores each season. Many argue the amount should have been higher. One fan commented, “At least 1 crore should have been given. These families lost young members who will never come back.”
Fan Reactions and Social Media Debate
The debate didn’t stop with RCB’s fanbase. CSK fans quickly joined in, trolling RCB on social media. Memes compared the restrictions at Chinnaswamy Stadium after the tragedy to CSK’s 2015 suspension, joking that RCB looked like they had “got bail after 3 months.”
Another meme highlighted how CSK returned from a two-year ban with trophies, while RCB’s one parade after a single title ended in punishment, including the ICC moving Women’s World Cup matches out of Bengaluru and KSCA shifting the Maharaja T20 Trophy to Mysuru.
Is Rs 25 Lakh Enough for the Loss?
So where does this leave RCB? On one hand, the franchise has taken responsibility with RCB CARES, a long-term plan that promises community support and remembrance of the victims. On the other, fans still question whether Rs 25 lakh per family truly matches the value of the lives lost.
The truth may lie somewhere in between. No financial support can ever fill the void left in these families, but now it’s up to RCB to turn RCB CARES into more than just words and rebuild trust with a grieving fan base.
