‘Transition’ or Excuses? Sarpanch on T20I Failures

Shreyas Iyer on India's transition phase

Is India really going through a transition phase? That has become the biggest talking point after captain Shreyas Iyer used the term to explain India’s T20I series defeat against England.

After another one-sided loss, Iyer said mistakes are expected because several young players are experiencing overseas conditions for the first time. He suggested the team is still adapting to the challenges.

However, India continue to field the core of the squad that won the T20 World Cup. While youngsters like Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and Prince Yadav have been introduced, this is not an entirely new team.

That is why the transition argument has sparked debate. After back-to-back T20I series defeats, many believe the explanation raises more questions than answers.

For months, Indian cricket was praised for having enough depth to field three competitive T20I XIs. The team’s bench strength was widely considered one of the best in world cricket.

Now, after series defeats against Ireland and England, the same team is being described as one that is going through a transition phase.

Every team experiences change over time. Young players also need opportunities to develop and adjust to international cricket, especially in overseas conditions.

However, can transition alone explain five defeats in six matches? Can it justify repeated batting failures and tactical errors throughout the series?

The debate is now growing louder. Is India genuinely in a transition phase, or is the term “transition” becoming an explanation for disappointing results?
