India’s T20 captain Suryakumar Yadav has explained why he is mostly seen playing T20 cricket and not Test matches or One Day Internationals.
Speaking in a podcast interview with PTI, Surya said that T20 cricket suits his game the most, even though he still has love for red ball cricket.
During the conversation, Suryakumar said he actually started his cricket journey with red ball cricket. He played Ranji Trophy for around 10 to 12 years for Mumbai and spent a long time focusing on the longer format.
According to him, players who grow up playing cricket in Mumbai usually begin with red ball cricket.
Despite, things slowly changed when he started playing white ball formats. Surya said that as time passed, his focus shifted more towards limited overs cricket and eventually towards T20s.
The Indian T20 Captain admitted that he tried hard to perform in ODI cricket but things did not work out the way he wanted. He said T20 cricket started going well for him and that format suited his game better.
Using a simple phrase, Surya said he feels comfortable and confident in T20 format.
Suryakumar also said he would still like to play Test cricket if he gets the chance. He reminded that he has already played one Test match for India against Australia in Nagpur in 2023, where he scored eight runs.
But at the age of 35, Surya knows it is not easy to make a comeback into the Test side because there is strong competition in the team.
He also spoke about ODI cricket and said it is a difficult format because a batter has to change his style during the innings.
Sometimes you have to play slowly like in Tests, then keep a good scoring rate in the middle overs, and finally attack like in T20 cricket.
Despite the challenges, Suryakumar said ODI cricket still has its own value. He recalled the atmosphere during the 2023 ODI World Cup and said the feeling around that tournament was very special and different from T20 competitions.
