Delays, Cancellations, and Chaos
The incident began on Wednesday, July 30, with a scheduled Delta flight from Salt Lake City (SLC) to London Heathrow (LHR). After a six-hour delay due to maintenance issues, the flight was finally cancelled. The airline rebooked passengers for the following day, but the problems only continued.
Shockingly, Delta reportedly used the same aircraft with the same unresolved maintenance issue. Unsurprisingly, the rebooked flight also suffered delays and was cancelled once again.
A Reroute After 48 Hours
After nearly two full days of confusion, the passenger was finally rerouted via Salt Lake City to Los Angeles and then on to London. They reached the UK two days later than originally scheduled.
But the problems were far from over.
Baggage Flown to the Wrong Airport
Although the passenger had been rerouted, their checked baggage was mistakenly sent to JFK Airport a day earlier. Multiple Delta agents had assured the traveller that the bag would follow the updated route to LHR. Instead, it was left at baggage claim in New York.
The traveller filed a mishandled bag report, but follow-up calls produced no results. Over the next two days, the bag did not make it onto any of the 14 JFK-to-LHR flights.
Eventually, after the passenger moved on to Slovenia, Delta claimed they could no longer send the bag internationally. After more calls and several days, the bag was finally shipped—not to the passenger’s location, but back to Salt Lake City.
Upgrade Certificate Denied
The traveller had originally booked the trip using a Global Upgrade Certificate (GUC) to access Delta One. However, the rebooked route included a Virgin Atlantic flight that had no Delta One availability.
Delta initially promised a refund of the GUC. But later, the airline marked the certificate as “used,” claiming the Virgin Atlantic flight included a “premium” seat. No compensation was given, and the case was closed without a proper explanation.
Airline Disruptions Continue to Frustrate
This situation highlights how difficult it can be to deal with airline disruptions today. System failures, miscommunication, and long waits with customer service leave travellers feeling helpless.
For this Delta passenger, the journey ended without a clear resolution. No proper refund, no upgrade recovery, and days of stress—all while doing everything by the book.
