Amazon H-1B Exposes Toxic Indian Culture in US

Toxic H1B work culture in US

A former Indian professional returning from the US has issued a blunt warning for aspirants chasing H-1B opportunities. In an online rant, he criticised work cultures at companies like Amazon, Walmart, and Intel, highlighting how toxic practices are sometimes propagated by fellow Indians.

Regional Hiring and Bias

He shared that some managers hire and exploit fellow Indians on visas, aware of their vulnerable position. While not a blanket statement about all Indians, he noted that overworking cultures can spread through these regional hirings, particularly in large corporations.

At Walmart, Telugu employees reportedly dominate the hiring process. At Intel, Gujaratis prefer fellow Gujaratis. University networks also play a role, with interns forming social connections like cricket games to secure opportunities.

Exploitation and Workload

The ex-H-1B holder explained that such hiring practices allow managers to extract more work from Indian employees at minimal pay. American workers, in contrast, are less likely to accept overtime without compensation, which can create workplace friction.

He added that these dynamics can lead to resentment from local employees, increasing tension and animosity toward immigrant workers. According to him, the H-1B rules could shake this ecosystem, limiting those who rely on influence and insider networks.

The Real Cost

Despite reforms, he warned that workers who play by the rules often bear the brunt. While some exploit the system through green cards or citizenship, honest and hardworking professionals face increased challenges in securing stable career growth in the US.
