Ramayana vs King: Is This ₹350 Cr Deal Comparison Even Fair?

Ramayana distribution deal sparks online debate

Namit Malhotra’s Ramayana has become the latest topic of discussion on social media following reports about its theatrical distribution deal. A day earlier, reports claimed that Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions had acquired the film’s all-India distribution rights for Rs. 250 crore.

Fresh reports have now suggested that Dharma Productions has secured only the Hindi distribution rights for a reported Rs. 350 crore. If the reports are accurate, it would become the biggest theatrical distribution deal in the history of Hindi cinema.

The revised valuation has also sparked fresh debate online. The earlier report of a Rs. 250 crore deal had already prompted many social media users to question whether it reflected the scale of the project.

Namit Malhotra had previously stated that Ramayana is being produced on a reported budget of around Rs. 2,000 crore across two parts. Following that claim, many questioned whether the initial distribution figure matched the film’s projected scale.

Even after the revised Rs. 350 crore figure emerged, the discussions continued. Some social media users described the latest report as an attempt at “damage control.” They believe the higher valuation surfaced after the earlier figure received widespread criticism online.

Another major talking point has been the comparison with King. Reports suggest that the new deal would surpass the theatrical distribution record associated with the Shah Rukh Khan film. However, several users argue that comparing the two projects is difficult because of their reported production budgets.

According to ongoing discussions, King is believed to have a production budget in the range of Rs. 200 crore to Rs. 300 crore. Some social media users have also speculated that the reported budget of Ramayana could eventually be revised. However, there has been no official announcement from the makers to support those claims.

For now, the reported distribution figures and budget discussions remain based on media reports and online speculation. The makers have not officially confirmed any changes regarding the film’s production cost or distribution agreements.
