Kantara 2 Drags Karnataka Govt to Court for Rs. 200

Kantara movie ticket dispute

The Karnataka government’s decision to cap cinema ticket prices at Rs. 200 has sparked legal challenges. Production houses and multiplex associations have approached the court, seeking intervention to protect their interests in the matter.

High ticket prices are crucial for filmmakers to recover investments during a film’s initial release. With Rishab Shetty’s Kantara Chapter 1 releasing soon, the makers have joined the legal battle, highlighting the impact of price caps on revenue.

Justice Ravi V Hosmani has already heard the plea and is expected to announce interim relief orders this month. A shareholder of PVR Inox has also challenged the government’s decision, adding weight to the petitioners’ arguments.

The petitioners argue that capping ticket prices is unfair, as multiplexes incur higher operational costs than single-screen theatres. They also question the exemption given to premium theatres, claiming there is no proper explanation for this distinction.

Udaya Holla, representing the petitioners, stated that exhibitors should set ticket prices, as they provide the services. He also cited a similar rule challenged in court a few years ago, which was withdrawn after legal intervention.

With several major films set to release in the coming weeks, the court’s decision will influence ticket rates. A ruling against the petitioners could delay certain film releases, affecting both producers and audiences eagerly awaiting new releases.
