Ram Pothineni is preparing for what could be the most important film of his career.
Tentatively titled RAPO23, the project is being mounted on a massive scale under the RAPO Cinematics banner, with producer Krishna Pothineni reportedly allocating a budget of nearly Rs. 100 crores, making it the costliest film in Ram’s career.
The scale is evident from the technical team assembled for the project. National Award-winning cinematographer Thiru is handling the visuals, star action choreographer Peter Hein is designing the stunt sequences, and renowned production designer A.S. Prakash is constructing massive sets on the outskirts of Hyderabad.
On paper, everything looks grand.
But the biggest talking point is not the technicians or the budget. It is Ram himself.
A few weeks ago, reports emerged that Ram has developed the story himself and is all set to make his debut as a director with the project. The move comes at a crucial stage.
For the last few years, Ram has experimented with various genres, mass entertainers, action dramas, and commercial formulas, hoping to deliver a major blockbuster. However, most of those films failed to meet expectations at the box office.
His last film, Andhra King Taluka, turned out to be a big disaster despite being a decent film. The film reportedly failed to even cross the Rs. 20 crore distributors share at the box office.
According to industry buzz, Ram has developed a sci-fi action drama after carefully analyzing what suits him best as a performer. Instead of depending entirely on outside writers and directors, he appears ready to take creative control himself. However, the risk is enormous.
A 100-crore budget is a huge investment even for stars with a consistent box-office track record. For an actor whose last release reportedly struggled to cross Rs. 20 crores, the gamble becomes even bigger.
If the content clicks, Ram could completely reinvent his career and silence many detractors in one stroke. The combination of a fresh sci-fi backdrop, top technicians, and his personal involvement could create something unique.
But if the film fails, it might take many years for him and his production house to recover. It could also affect his career very negatively.
